The term Kleinbahn (literally 'small railway') was a concept used especially in Prussia for a railway line that "on account of its low importance for general railway transport" had less strict requirements placed on its construction and operation that main lines (Hauptbahnen) or secondary lines (Nebenbahnen i.e. normal branch lines). Even public railway lines built for constructional or industrial purposes were counted as Kleinbahnen.

Hydra (Greek: Ύδρα, pronounced [ˈiðra], sometimes in English spelled Idhra to reflect the Greek pronunciation) is one of the Saronic Islands of Greece, located in the Aegean Sea between the Saronic Gulf and the Argolic Gulf. It is separated from the Peloponnese by narrow strip of water. In ancient times, the island was known as Hydrea (Υδρέα, derived from the Greek word for "water"), which was a reference to the springs on the island.
Hydra is also a municipality and one of the few provinces in Greece to have two municipalities — which includes the island of Dokos (pop. 13) — yet fewer than five communes. However, there are no municipal boundaries on the island and its smaller islands.
There is one main town, known simply as "Hydra port" (pop. 2,526 in 2001). It consists of a crescent-shaped harbor, around which is centered a strand of restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries that cater to tourists and locals (Hydriots). Steep stone streets lead up and outwards from the harbor area. Most of the local residences, as well as the hostelries on the island are located on these streets. Other small villages or hamlets on the island include Mandraki (pop. 33), Kamini, Vlychos (28), Palamidas (18), Episkopi, and Molos (2).

What do you know about this art style - Art Nouveau?

Art Nouveau District.

The architectural and artistic answer to the literary Modernist movement that began in the late 19th century was the Art Nouveau movement in Europe. The Art Nouveau movement reached its peak in the early 20th century, which is when the majority of Riga’s Art Nouveau houses were built, beginning in 1899. Riga’s term for the movement, Jugendstil, comes from the German and Scandinavian movement named after the avant-garde periodical Jugend (“Youth”). Unlike the stiffer sensibilities of Victorian style, Art Nouveau stressed a complete creative freedom, mixing fantastic elements with a tendency to show all utilitarian construction elements as artistic value, with very characteristic elements such as dynamic, undulating, and flowing lines and geometrical ornaments. In Riga, Art Nouveau could be split into two main directions, decorative and romantic-nationalistic Art Nouveau.

Riga is one of the largest centres of Art Nouveau, with more than a third of the buildings of its Central district built in the style; other significant centres include Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, Vienna,Krakow, and Moscow and St.Petersburg, among others. The main street for Riga’s Art Nouveau district is Elizabetes, which intersects Brivibas Boulevard. In addition to Elizabetes Street, Alberta and Strelnieku Streets also feature impressive examples of the style. In total, there are over 800 Art Nouveau buildings in Riga, but finding them all would be quite an ambitious undertaking, so we’ll try to guide you to the most noteworthy ones.

Significantly, most of the Art Nouveau buildings were designed and built by Latvian architects. Buildings in the decorative Art Nouveau style by one of the most famous architects, Mikhail Eisenstein (father of director Sergei Eisenstein), can be found at Elizabetes 10a and 10b, as well as at Alberta 2, 2a, 4, 8 and 13. On Alberta 13 stands a building from 1904 which now houses the Riga Graduate School of Law, which is fully restored and publicly accessible. Right around the corner, Strelnieku Street also features eccentric examples of the style. Romantic-nationalist Art Nouveau can be seen in the buildings by Latvian architects E. Laube, K. Peksens, and A. Vanags, such as those on Terbatas Street 15/17 and Brivibas Street 47, 58, and 62.

XXI OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES. VANCOUVER

The XXI Olympic Winter Games shall take place in Vancouver, city of Canada, on 12-28 of February 2010.The Games expect to have participants from almost 100 countries. That will be a new record of the number of participating countries in the history of Winter Olympics. The authors of this record will be also sportsmen from Lithuania. Four skiers, one biathlete and one alpine skier will represent our country. For the biathlon contestant Diana Rasimovičiūtė and skier Irina Terentjeva it will be the third Winter Olympics.The debut of Lithuania in the Olympic Winter Games was in 1928, when the skater Kęstutis Bulota performed in St. Moritz. Lithuania has two champions of Winter Olympics: biathlete Algimantas Šalna and his team won gold in the relay in 1984 Sarajevo Games, and the skier Vida Vencienė became Olympic champion in 1988 in Calgary. She also became a bronze medallist there.The sportsmen will be given 1 014 medals in Vancouver.

In the new postage stamp with value Ls 0.45 is represented Latvia orienteer and in the European championship orienteering sport logo. The postage stamp artistic author is Girts Griva.

Postage stamp 200 000 copies made in the France enterprise Cartor Security Printing.

Together with a postage stamp an envelope and special seal of the first day is given out also. In locality cards are the envelope of the first day evident, an orienteers substantial instrument – compass and championship logo;also in a compass is the special seal represented.

Latvia hosts European Championships and first World Cup round
The early season events are past and the big Tvåmila and Tiomila relays have also taken place; many top competitors have also been training for this year’s World Championships in the Czech Republic and competing in the Moravian Open Championships. Now the world’s elite are looking forward to the first international championship event of 2008, the European Championships, in which the three individual finals also form the first round of the 2008 World Cup.
Ventspils, a harbour town in Latvia beside the Baltic Sea, is the event centre for the championships and the venue for the sprint races and the relay. In the middle and long distance races, high technical skills will be needed to cope with the very detailed sand dune terrain in the area, whilst one of the main physical challenges will be the marshes, which amount to 20% of the area in the long distance final and a significant part of the middle distance areas. The sprint races will be held in the town, with a good mix of urban area, parkland, dunes and beach, whilst the relay terrain is based around an old army base on the edge of the town, using coniferous forest along with complex duneland.
110 women and 137 men representing 29 countries will be taking part. Each nation can enter 6 runners per class and 2 relay teams of 3 per class, and the current European Champions have a ‘wild card’ entry in addition. There are qualification races for each of the 3 individual race formats with the top 17 from each of 3 heats in each class going through to the finals.

This issue is designed to promote the World Stamp Exhibition PRAGA 2008 which is to be held on September 12-14, 2008 at the Prague-Holešovice Exhibition Grounds. The Navrátil's mural used on the stamp is also to commemorate the 90th anniversary of foundation of the Postal Museum in Prague (18.12.1918). J. Navrátil (1798-1865) was the most famous Prague decorative painter dominating in murals for town-houses and houses for aristocrats and the emperor. The nice two-floor house at Prague 1, Nové mlýny 2, the seat of the Postal Museum, is the original residential part of the former mill located at this site. In the 19th century it was the property of a rich miller and art benefactor Michalovic who asked his friend Navrátil for its decoration. The so-called Theatre Saloon displays 16 scenes from historical legends and theatre plays, e.g. Oldřich and Božena, Libuše's Judgement, Vilém Tell or Bath Servant Zuzana Carrying the King Wenceslas IV Over the Vltava River. We can admire the last one on the postage stamp. Located in the same room is also Navrátil's self-portrait used on the first day cover. The third saloon, the former dining room, displays paintings of romantic landscapes including Alpine scenes as remembered by the author from his travelling in Austria, Italy and Switzerland. These murals belong to the last murals painted by Navrátil in Prague. The postage stamp will be issued in the form of printed sheets and booklets of 8 stamps and 4 coupons.

The postage stamp designed for Easter correspondence features the "Mourning over the Dead Christ", a detail from the panel altar painting created by the Master of the Vyšebrodský Cycle before 1350. This anonymous artist who belongs to the founders of the Czech Gothic panel painting is named after the alter in the South Bohemian Cistercian monastery at Vyšší Brod. The Cistercian order was famous for the cult of Mary. The completely preserved cycle of feasts, probably in the original form of a square retable, displays nine scenes of the Christ's life, from the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary up to the Descent of the Holy Spirit. The form of the painting combines the western linear concept with Italianising softening shapes. The work on canvas mounted on lime wood panel is the property of the National Gallery in Prague. The Vyšebrodský Master's cycle includes paintings such as, e.g. Madonna of Veveří, Strahov, Kladsko as well as murals in the vestry of St. Thomas Church at the Lesser Town in Prague.
